Three: Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant A. J. Davies, Australian Remount Unit, Australian Imperial Forces

Alfred John Davies was born in Barking, Essex. Living at 515 Brunswick Street, Valley, Brisbane, Queensland and a Clerk by occupation, he enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces on 16 Sepember 1915, aged 46 years, 3 months. He had previously served 10 years in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion Norfolk Regiment. Due to his previous service he was promoted to Squadron Quartermaster Serjeant on 20 September 1915. In February 1916 he was taken on the strength of the Australian Records Section, 3rd Echelon, at Alexandria, and in September was posted to France. In January 1917 he was promoted to Engineer Staff-Serjeant and in June was posted to England. Admitted to Harefield Hospital with a duodenal ulcer during March/April 1918, he later returned to his unit reverting to the rank of Squadron Quartermaster Serjeant. He returned to Australia aboard the Wahihe in October 1919 and was demobilized on 7 November 1919. Sold with five Australian metal uniform badges and an A.I.F. ‘Returned from Active Service’ Badge; together with copied service papers and other research.
