Frederick Gardiner Smith was born in Edmonton, London on 14 August 1877. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1893. Advanced to Boy 1st Class in September 1894, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman whilst on the
Tamar in August 1895 and Able Seaman whilst on the Volage in December 1897. He began service on the cruiser Terrible in September 1899. Serving ashore during the Boer War, Smith gained the clasps for Tugela Heights and the Relief of Ladysmith - possibly as a member of a gun or searchlight crew. Able Seaman Smith died of enteric fever at Durban Hospital, Natal, on 31 March 1900, and was interred at the Wyatt Road Cemetery, Durban. His medal was sent to his father on 16 October 1902.
