M.M. London Gazette 28 January 1943. Recommendation states: ‘During an attack on the enemy strong point known as Woodcock on the night 1/2 Nov. Pte. King was advancing with his Coy. when an enemy LMG opened fire at close range. Pte. King was badly wounded, one of his legs receiving a whole burst of fire. Although in great pain from this wound, he continued to go forward, hopping on one leg, he went straight for the enemy post and bayonetted the three occupants of the trench manning the LMG. Only then did he allow the Coy. Stretcher Bearers to attend to his wounds. The outstanding gallantry and determination of this action by Pte. King enabled the advance to continue without further casualties and was of the utmost value in maintaining the momentum of the attack’.
