John Charles Walker lived in Keighley and enlisted at Halifax. Serving as Company Sergeant-Major in the 1/4th Battalion West Riding Regiment, he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. He was killed in action on 3 September 1916 during the attack upon Martinsart Wood in the latter stages of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Sold with original commemorative scroll with card container addressed to Mrs N. Walker, Keighley.
