Four: Lieutenant M. G. Henderson, Royal Navy, who was killed in action on 16 July 1940 when serving on H.M. Submarine Phoenix in the Mediterranean

Lieutenant Malcolm Garnet Henderson, Royal Navy, was killed in action on 16 July 1940 when serving on H.M. Submarine Phoenix (Lieut-Commander G. N. Nowell). On 16 July Nowell sighted the Italian tanker Dora which was sailing under escort near Augusta, off the eastern Sicilian coast. He decided to attack the tanker but was spotted by her escorts. The submarine was attacked and sunk with depth-charges by the Italian motor torpedo boat Albatros. She was lost with all hands. On 21 July 1940 Henderson was officially accepted as being killed in action. His name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Sold with card medal forwarding box addressed to ‘Major G. M. Henderson, Glen Cottage, Salisbury Grove, Mytchett, Aldershot, Hants’ and with named condolence slip and copied research.
