Alfred George Dearle was born in Reading, Berkshire in March 1900 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in August 1915. Having attended the training ship Powerful, he served in the battleship H.M.S. Emperor of India from August 1916 until the end of the War, gaining advancement to Able Seaman in the same period. Little about his subsequent career is known, although he lost one Good Conduct Badge for being found guilty of deserting his post as Quarter Master of the Watch in the sloop Foxglove August 1924.
