Alexander Duncan Cameron was born in Dundee, Scotland. Employed as an ‘Elevator man’ in Montreal and having previously served for five years in the (Imperial) Black Watch, he enlisted into the C.E.F. on 17 May 1915. Serving with the 42nd Battalion Canadian Infantry, he entered the French theatre of war in October 1915. In May 1916 he was transferred to the Anti-Gas School and in June was promoted to Serjeant. Appointed Acting Staff Serjeant in August 1917, he was transferred to Gas Services Canadian Corps as an Instructor in February 1918. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 31 December 1918). He was demobilized on 22 April 1919. He died in Montreal as a result of an accident on 30 March 1951.
