George James was one of just 34 members of the Army Ordnance Corps to receive the Africa General Service Medal for the Somaliland operations of 1902-04. From 1906-11, he served out in India, where he was attached to assorted artillery units and was advanced to Armament Quarter-Master Sergeant in December 1910, and he first entered the French theatre of war in the same rank on 1 October 1914.
