Charles Leonard Le Baron Whyte, who was born in Pensicola, Florida in the U.S.A. in May 1873, entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1889. He subsequently served aboard H.M.S. Centurion from February 1897 to September 1901, during which period he was advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class and was landed for service in the Naval Brigade during the Boxer Rebellion. Advanced to Chief Petty Officer and awarded his L.S. & G.C. in 1911, he was pensioned ashore in May 1913, when he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve.
