Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (5928 Pte., 1st Rl. Sussex Regt.), surname spelt ‘Ancell’; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (5928 Pte., Rl. Sussex Regt.); 1914 Star with clasp (5928 L. Cpl., 2/R. Sussex R.); British War and Victory Medals (L-5928 Pte., R. Suss. Frederick James Ansell was born in Angmering, Sussex and enlisted at Lewes on 21 August 1899, aged 19 years, 8 months. Serving with the Royal Sussex Regiment he served in Malta, December 1899; South Africa, August-September 1900 and India, October-November 1902. In the Great War he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment on 21 August 1914. He died of wounds on 11 September 1914 and was buried in the Priez Communal Cemetery, Aisne, France. He was the son of Walter and Mary Ansell of Angmering, Sussex and husband of Edith Mildred Ansell of 19 Sydney Terrace, Bridport Street, Dorchester. Sold with a photocopy of the recipient’s ‘Small Book’ and other research.
