Edward Wise was born at Henley, Oxfordshire, on 11 January 1873, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 14 March 1888. His service record shows that he ‘ran’ from H.M.S. Research at Kirkwall in October 1895, was recovered the following month and jailed at Lewis Gaol until 20 February 1896. He ‘ran’ again from H.M.S. Imperieuse whilst at Vancouver in October 1896 but his punishment was rather more severe when he was recovered the following June - 60 days Hard Labour. He served with Powerful’s naval brigade in South Africa and was present throughout the Defence of Ladysmith. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth in March 1906, and re-enrolled in 1911 for a further three years. During the Great War he served in Europa, Cormorant, Blenheim and Savage, and was shore pensioned in April 1921. Sold with copy service record.
