James Fryer was advanced to Colour-Sergeant at Rawalpindi in June 1879, shortly before participating in the Second Afghan War with the 2nd Battalion, 81st Foot. Recommended for his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1881, he returned to the U.K. in January 1883, where he was appointed a Sergeant Instructor in the Volunteer Battalion.
