John Charter was born at St. Ives, Huntingdon and originally enlisted in the 19th Regiment in February 1863, aged 18 years, having earlier seen service in the Huntingdonshire Militia. Transferring to the 55th Regiment later that year, he went on to witness active service in the Bhootan operations before exchanging to the 7th Foot in July 1875. He subsequently served in the Second Afghan War, including the battle of Kandahar, and was discharged as medically unfit in May 1884 - but did not qualify for the L.S. & G.C. Medal, on one occasion having been imprisoned for falling asleep at his post.
