Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State (Lieut. B. M. Maxwell-Heron, Sco. Rif.) very fine £200-240

Basil Charles Montagu Maxwell-Heron was born on 18 June 1878, the second son of John Heron Maxwell-Heron of Heron and Kiroughtree, D.L., J.P. Commissioned in the Militia in February 1900, he was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th (Militia) Battalion Scottish Rifles. He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1901 and an Honorary Lieutenant in the Army in June 1901. Serving in the Boer War, 1900-02, he took his discharge prior to 1904. At the outbreak of the Great War he received a commission as Temporary Lieutenant in October 1914 and was promoted to Temporary Captain the same year. He served as a Staff Captain in the 8th (Service) Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment in the 70th Brigade, 8th Division. Captain Maxwell-Heron died in London on 22 September 1916 when serving as an Assistant Military Landing Officer on the Special List. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery.
