Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Private Leister Snowden, H.M. 40th Regt.) replacement suspension fitting and straight bar suspension, edge bruising, good fine £260-300

Leister Snowden was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 40th Regiment at Manchester on 5 July 1834, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in India and Afghanistan for 7 years and Australia for 5 years and was awarded the Candahar Ghuznee Cabul Medal 1842 and the Maharajpoor Star 1843. Although his ‘Character and Conduct’ were summarized as ‘Good’, his papers state that he was four times tried by Court Martial - for desertion, neglect, drunkenness and absence without leave. He was discharged as medically unfit on 13 July 1858. Sold with copied services papers. See lot 1062 for a renamed Candahar Ghuznee Cabul Medal to Snowden.
