William Charles Gilson was born in West Ham, London in April 1888 and enlisted as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class in the Royal Naval Air Service in August 1916. His service record reveals that he was employed on the Greek mainland in Kassandra in 1918 and, having transferred to the R.A.F. in April of the same year, he was demobilised in April 1920.
