145 no-clasp Queen’s South Africa Medals were awarded to the ship’s company of H.M.S. Fearless.

Ernest Earley was born in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight in December 1870 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in January 1890. Advanced to Leading Stoker 1st Class in April 1899, he served in H.M.S. Fearless from June to November 1900, including time off South Africa, and was advanced to Chief Stoker in February 1905, the same month in which he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal.

Having been pensioned ashore in February 1912, when he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve, Earley was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities and served out in the Mediterranean from August 1915 to April 1918, prior to returning home to an appointment at the Dover base Attentive II. He was demobilised in February 1919.
