Five: Sister M. W. Shingleton, Territorial Force Nursing Service

1914-15 Star (S/Nurse, T.F.N.S.); British War and Victory Medals (Sister); Messina Earthquake Medal 1908, silver, unnamed, mounted as worn; together with T.F.N.S. Cape Badge, unnamed, fourth medal with edge bruising, good very fine and better (5) £300-350

Mabel Winifred Shingleton served in the T.F.N.S. during the war, serving as a Staff Nurse at the 2 Southern General Hospital in 1915 and as a Sister at 51 Stationary Hospital in 1918 and 38 Stationary Hospital in 1919. Intending to leave the nursing profession, she resigned from the service on 2 March 1921. Sold with copied service papers including several annual reports on the recipient.

The medals are in a contemporary glass-fronted display case. Whilst the cataloguer knows of no way of verifying a Messina Medal to a Nurse, it is quite clear from the display that this set of medals has been together for a considerable length of time.
