Fleet Floyd Strother-Smith was born on 30 July 1883. He qualified as a M.D. and Ch.B. at Edinburgh and was commissioned into the Indian Medical Service in July 1908. Promoted to Captain in 1911, he served in Egypt, 1914-15; Gallipoli, 1915; Greek Macedonia, 1916-18 and Persia, 1919. For his services he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Serbian Order of St. Sava. He attained the rank of Colonel in 1928 and retired in July 1940. On 6 October 1939 he was appointed Honorary Surgeon to the Viceroy. He was re-employed in August 1940 as C.O. of the General Hospital at Deolali. Smith was the author of A Medical Survey of Aden.
