Arthur Frederick Nethey served with the Cape Mounted Rifles in South Africa during the Boer War. He was a Sergeant in No. 2 Squadron on 12 August 1914, when he went to France, and his good work earned him a recommendation for the Military Medal which was not awarded. This recommendation, dated 27 June 1916, reads: ‘For meritorious work in the field and continued devotion to duty from 14-8-14 to date. This N.C.O. did valuable service at YPRES in 1914 repairing engines and machines under heavy shell fire.’ He was Acting Sergeant Major from 1 January 1916 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant (Equipment Officer) on 16 September 1917.
