K.P.M. Gazette of India 1 January 1921: ‘Sperintendent, Bombay City Police, Officiating Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bombay. This officer joined the Bombay City Police as a Mounted Constable on the 14th May 1897. He was seriously injured during the riots of 1898 and narrowly escaped with his life. He was transferred to the Foot Police in 1899, since when he gradually rose, through merit and ability, to be selected to officiate as Deputy Commissioner. He displayed marked ability as an administrative officer in charge of “A” Division of the City, which comprises Colaba, Fort South, Fort North, Esplanade, and Dhobitalo. For the greater part of the war he was in charge of this Division, where his work was of the highest order. It was largely owing to his efforts that the Division was free, in spite of the presence of a large number of officers and men passing through the City, from any disorganization. In the middle of 1919 he was transferred to the “D” Division, where he continued to do excellent work. He has come to prominence particularly in connection with his work in the recent mill strikes. The temporary Head Quarters of the Military and Police throughout the 32 days of the strike were situated in his Division. He was personally responsible for arranging all details in connection with the distribution and location of troops and his work throughout this trying period was invaluable. He was on duty without interruption from daybreak till well after dark throughout the period of the strike. His recognition as being a Police Officer of exceptional merit is supported by the fact that he has been selected among the Superintendents to officiate as Deputy Commissioner, and that he is the first officer of the City cadre to hold this appointment for the past 20 years. He served 5 and a half years in the 5th Dragoon Guards.’
