Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (17628 L.Cpl., 2/S. Lanc. R.); Military Medal, G.V.R. (17628 Cpl., 2/S. Lanc. R.) a little polished, therefore nearly very fine (2) £400-500

D.C.M. London Gazette 16 August 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of battalion H.Q. orderlies. On several occasions he accompanied them through heavy shell fire to give them confidence. He has on all occasions shown himself to be absolutely fearless, tireless and can be depended upon to carry any message anywhere.’

Sergeant William Mallin was from Warrington and was one of six brothers, all of whom served during the War. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and went abroad in March 1915. He was killed in action in France on 1 September 1918. Sold with copy news cutting which gives a portrait of him wearing both awards and details of his death in action.
