A good Great War ‘Givenchy’ D.C.M. group of four to Private T. Barton, Grenadier Guards, whose gallantry for rescuing wounded men from a trench destroyed by the explosion of an enemy mine is illustrated in the book ‘Deeds That Thrill The Empire’

D.C.M. London Gazette 11 March 1916 ‘For conspicuous gallantry when the saps and the front trench were blown in by a mine Lance Corporal Rhodes and Private Barton displayed great coolness and bravery in at once running forward and continuing to dig out their wounded comrades, until they were both wounded.’

Private Timothy Barton enlisted into the Grenadier Guards 19 October 1914 serving initially with the 2nd battalion and later with the 5th battalion, with whom he served for the duration of the Great War. His D.C.M. was awarded for an action near Givenchy, France on 6 August 1915. Lance Corporal Rhodes who assisted Barton was awarded a bar to his D.C.M. for this action, significantly he was two years later to be decorated with the Victoria Cross. Barton was discharged on10 May 1919, but again joined the colours in March 1923 serving another 4 years before his final discharge in March 1927.
