A Great War D.S.O. group of five awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel John Harvey, Commanding 10th Battalion, Royal Highlanders, wounded in the Boer War at the battle of Magersfontein

Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R.; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Paardeberg, Driefontein (Lieut., 2nd Rl. Highldrs.); 1914-15 Star (Major, R. Highrs.); British War and Victory Medals (Lt. Col.) with named card boxes of issue for the last three and an original portrait photograph, good very fine and better (5) £1400-1600

John Harvey was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Highlanders in July 1891, Lieutenant, June 1894. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the Boer War and was wounded at the battle of Magersfontein, 12 December 1899, being promoted Captain in July 1900. Major Harvey was one of the original officers of the 10th Battalion, and left with them for France on 17th September 1915, arriving with the advanced guard at Longeau, south west of Amiens, on 20th September. In November 1915, with Harvey in command, the battalion sailed for Salonika, where he served until invalided in August 1917. Lieutenant-Colonel Harvey died on 10 November 1944.
