M.S.M. London Gazette 4 June 1916 ‘For valuable service with the army in France & Flanders.’ Only 141 Army MSMs awarded to the Royal Flying Corps.

Enlisted on 8 August 1914 for the duration of the War under terms of the Special Order of 4 August. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal whilst serving in France with No. 19 Squadron. Promoted to Temp Sergeant Mechanic (Technical) in July 1917, and is shown as Chief Master Mechanic in April 1918 RAF Muster Roll.
