General Gordon’s Star for the Seige of Khartoum 1884, in pewter, accompanied by two contemporary letters of provenance, a) ‘A Star struck by General Gordon to commemorate the Siege of Khartoum. Twelve were struck in gold, a few in silver for the officers and some in lead for the soldiers. This one is a lead Star and was purchased from one of Gordon’s soldiers who came from Khartoum in his Steamers‘, signed C. L. S., Korti, 22 February 1885. b) ‘I hereby certify that the Gordon Star sold by me to Spink & Son was purchased by me from one of Gordon’s black soldiers at Korti in February 1885’, signed Charles L. Sheppard, Capt., Naval Ordnance Department, Late Ordnance Store Department, dated 16 February 1897., good very fine and an interesting piece £300-400

Captain Charles Lee Sheppard seved in the Egyptian War of 1882 with the Ordnance Store Department where he was Mentioned in Despatches and granted the Honorary rank of Captain. Harts Army Liist 1887 refers.
