John Cochrane was born at Neath, Glamorgan, on 26 July 1843, and enlisted into the 42nd Highlanders in October 1860 at Glasgow. He re-enlisted at Edinburh in March 1869 to complete 21 years, and accompanied the regiment to the Gold Coast and was slightly wounded in the throat by a slug at the action at Ordahsu on 4 February 1874. He saw no further active service but ‘while in charge of a regimental working party on board H.M.S. Himalaya, 22nd July 1878, he fell 25 feet down an ash shoot into the stoke hole and sustained severe injuries to ankles, chest and back.’ He was discharged at Netley being unfit for service owing to the above injuries, in August 1879, and died in Glasgow on 15 April 1897.
