John Pilfold was born in Lewes, Sussex and enlisted in the Scots Guards in London in June 1890, aged 18 years. Actively employed in South Africa with the 1st Battalion, he was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts for good service during a Boer attack on a convoy to Krugersdorp on 8 January 1901 (London Gazette 10 September 1901).
