James Folley joined the Navy as a volunteer at Portsmouth on 11 July 1805. He was rated as a Boy 3rd Class and served in this ship at the battle of Trafalgar, when she had 7 killed and 29 wounded. Folley was discharged to the Hospital Ship Argonaut on 22 December 1805, suffering from a fractured jaw. Whether this injury was caused by enemy action or a seafaring accident is not known but Folley was consequently invalided from the service on 8 January 1806. Sold with research by Captain Douglas-Morris.
The recipient served aboard the Defence at Trafalgar
