Entering the Royal Navy on 1949, Haward was appointed Midshipman later the same year. Promoted Acting Sub- Lieutenant in 1951, he served as a Pilot aboard the aircraft carriersSeahawk and Glory before being promoted Lieutenant in November 1952 and serving aboard the carrier H.M.S. Indomitable. In 1954 he was posted to H.M.S. Fulmar (Lossiemouth) as Senior Pilot with 759 Squadron and later served with 804 Squadron.
