Edward McSorley entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Assistant Surgeon on 1.10.1852 and first saw service aboard H.M.S. Cruizer. In December the same year he transferred to the paddle-wheel steam frigate H.M.S. Firebrand as Assistant Surgeon. During the Crimea War the ship saw service in the Black Sea and the Danube. McSorley continued to serve aboard the Firebrand until after the cessation of hostilities with Russia. He was promoted Surgeon in 1861 and died whilst on active service aboard H.M.S. Rattler in 1866. The award of the Order of the Medjidie is confirmed in the Navy List.
