Thomas Manners Townley was born at Fulbourne, Cambridgeshire, in 1825, and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a Cricket “Blue” in 1847 and 1848. He was appointed a Cornet in the 10th Hussars on 21 August 1849, and became Lieutenant on 8 August 1851. He served in the Crimea in 1855, including the capture of Tchorgaun, battle of the Tchernaya, and siege of Sebastopol. Promoted to Captain on 12 May 1857, he was, from 1856 to 1858, on the Staff and A.D.C. to Major-General William Parlby, who commanded the 10th Hussars in the Crimea and subsequently commanded the cavalry of the Dublin Division. Townley resigned his commission in 1858. A noted amateur steeplechaser, he won second place in the Grand National in 1860. Captain Townley died in London on 9 April 1895, and was buried at Fulbourne.
