Sir Patrick Manson (1844-1922), physician and parasitologist, who was the first scientist to suggest mosquitoes carried the malaria parasite. Instituted in 1923, the medal was awarded triennially to the living author of such original work in any branch of tropical medicine as the Council considered to be worthy of the honour
