James Shishongwe was a member of the Venda tribe from the far Northern Transvaal, and attested at Pretoria in March 1941. He served in the Native Military Corps in North Africa from Spetember 1941 and with the 4th S.A. Armoured Car Regiment as a Driver from July to October 1942, and then with the 4/6 Armoured Car Regiment until February 1943. He saw service under Lt.-Col. R. Reeves-Moore at El Alamein and thereafter took part in operations with the Rotal Dragoons, behind the German lines, against the 15th Panzer and 90th Light Regiments, and in pursuit of Rommel’s Afrika Corps. In February 1943 he returned to South Africa and served at 3 Air Depot until his final discharge in September 1945.
