Ronald Bishop Newman was born on 1 January 1900. He served in France and Belgium with the Royal Fusiliers from 28 July to 6 September 1918, and was wounded in action. He transferred to the Royal Signals and served in Palestine and during the Second World War, being commissioned Lieutenant (Technical Maintenance Officer), Royal Signals, on 19 December 1939. He was promoted War Substantive Captain in December 1942, and Captain in December 1945.
