Sold with copy of recommendation, dated 2 December 1924, which states ‘For long and exceptionally meritorious service. He served for 26 years in the Royal Irish Constabulary, and joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary when the former force was disbanded. He has been in charge of the Smithfield Station for some years and displayed gallantry, courage and devotion to duty of a very high standard during the outbreak of disorder and crime within recent years. His sub-district was one of the most disturbed in the city, twelve persons were shot dead and forty wounded during the riots in that sub-district. Sergeant Maguire’s courage and loyalty were outstanding and his example encouraged and heartened the men under his command.’
