A C.B. and Crimean War group of five awarded to Major-General W. J. E. Grant, Royal Artillery

The Most Honourable Order of The Bath (Military) C.B., breast badge in gold and enamels, not hallmarked, a good quality badge of private manufacture, fitted with gold swivel-ring bar suspension and gold ribbon buckle; Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Major, Rl. Arty.) contemporary engraved naming; Legion of Honour, 2nd Empire, Knight’s breast badge, silver and enamels, some enamel damage; Order of the Medjidie, 5th class, silver, gold and enamels; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, the Crimea with some pitting, otherwise nearly very fine or better (5) £500-700

William James Esten Grant was born in Bermuda on 29 September 1823 and entered the Royal Artillery as a Gentleman Cadet in January 1842. He served in the Crimea from 18 January 1855, in the trenches with the siege train, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and the bombardments of April and June (6th and 17th), (Medal with clasp, Brevet of Major, Knight of Legion of Honour, 5th class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). During his service career he also served abroad in St Helena, Canada, India and China. He was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria on 24 August 1866, and created a Companion of the Bath. He died as a Major-General on full pay in Guernsey, Channel Islands, on 28 November 1886.
