John Cambridge, a ‘man of colour’, was born at Nassau, New Providence, West Indies, in February 1830, and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman aboard Cossack in August 1854. He transferred to Hannibal in November 1854 and saw service in the Baltic and Crimea. He re-engaged for a further 10 years in January 1864 and was pensioned to shore in September 1877, his character then being described as exemplary. Sold with copy service papers.
