Lieutenant Colonel Donald William Mackinnon entered the army as an Ensign on 27 July 1961; promoted to Lieutenant, 22 March 1864; served in the Abyssinian Campaign of 1867, as Sub-Assistant Commissary General; Captain, 6 December 1873; transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Leinster Regiment, and promoted Major, 1 July 1881; Lieutenant Colonel, 1 December 1885, retired on 17 April 1889.
