Ghulam Muhammed served extensively during the war of 1914-21, including the operations at Sheikh Said, South Arabia, 10-11 November 1914; Egypt 1914-15; Gallipoli 1915; France 1915; Iraq 1916; Mohmand, N.W. Frontier, 1917; Iraq 1917-18; Greek Macedonia 1918; South Russia, January 1919 to June 1920. He was twice mentioned in despatches, 1916 and 1920, and awarded the I.D.S.M. for an action at Abu Roman during the final attempt to relieve Kut. 'Many deeds of heroism were performed in this action, and it is hard to choose which to chronicle. The determination of Subedar Zaman Shah and Colour-Havildar Ghulam Muhammad in maintaining their precarious position in face of all odds, their steadiness and coolness, which inspired such confidence in their men and their marked ability in handling the withdrawal when ordered to retire, is beyond all praise.
