Private J. Kelly is confirmed in Irish Medals, by Oliver D. Cresswell as being one of only 75 men of the Leinster Regiment to receive the clasp for Natal. These men were all reservists from the Militia who served with the South Lancashire Regiment.

A total of 16 Special Reserve L.S. & G.C. Medals were awarded to the 5th Battalion, Leinster Regiment, Kelly being awarded his medal in January 1910.
