James Arden Crommelin was born in Calcutta on 2 February 1801, son of Charles Russell Crommelin, Bengal Civil Service. He was educated in England at Harrow, 1814-17, and was an Addiscombe Cadet, 1817-19. He joined the service as an Ensign in the Bengal Engineers in November 1821, became Lieutenant in May 1824, and took part in the 1st Burma War (Medal with clasp). He was Adjutant from 1823 to 1830, and from May 1828 to April 1829, was in the service of the King of Oudh. He was appointed Executive Engineer of the Dum-Dum Division in October 1833, and became Superintending Engineer of the North West Provinces from March 1841 until his retirement in January 1843. He became Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in November 1854, and died on 30 January 1893.
