Augustus H. Bird, a builders apprentice from Shepherds Bush, aged 19, gained the award of the Royal Humane Society‘s bronze Medal for jumping from the pier at Bognor, Sussex, and rescuing two young ladies who had sunk whilst bathing, bringing them back seperately.
