Sampson Richard Bridges was born in Ripley, Derbyshire, on 24 March 1898 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Second Class on 27 March 1917. He served during the latter stages of the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, and was advanced Stoker First Class on 23 January 1919. He was shore discharged on 7 April 1922, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day.
