Frederick Mascoll was born in Barbados and attested for the 2nd West India Regiment at Bridgetown on 6 June 1887. He served in West Africa from 6 January 1889 to 20 February 1892, and again from 22 December 1894 to 7 January 1897, and took part in the Gambia Expedition 1891-92, and the Ashanti Expedition 1895-96. He was medically discharged, physically unfit for further service, on 16 February 1897, after 9 years and 256 days’ service, his physical condition ‘probably aggravated by fatigue and exposure during the late Ashanti Expedition’.
