William James Ryder was born on 17 May 1882, at Bridgwater, Somerset. He first enrolled into the Royal Naval Reserve on 17 May 1902 and undertook R.N.R. training in H.M.S. Colossus and H.M.S. Talbot. During the Great War he served in H.M.S. Talbot and H.M.S. Vivid. He was demobilized on 6 January 1919, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in August 1919.
