The original Recommendation, dated 23 July 1916, states: ‘For devotion to duty in the most arduous circumstances, being ever the most willing to go forward and bring in wounded, often under fire, and though hardly able to continue from exhaustion, still his fine spirit and sympathy for the wounded enabled him to carry on.’
Robert Hutchinson English attested for the Australian Imperial Force on 27 September 1915, and served with the 14th Australian Field Ambulance during the Great War on the Western Front, being awarded the Military Medal. He returned to Australia on 12 June 1919.
