Charles Yarram was born in Portsea, Hampshire in September 1870. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in September 1886, and advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class in April 1900. Service included in H.M. Ships Gibraltar, March 1901 - June 1902, and Kent (cruiser) during the Great War.
