M.C. London Gazette 4 November 1915:
‘For conspicuous gallantry in France. He has on three occasions carried out daring and successful reconnaissances of the German lines. On the last occasion, the night of 26-27 September 1915, after penetrating the wire in front of the enemy’s first line trenches, he personally silenced their fire with his bombs at 30 yards distance, and then, remaining alone, successfully covered the withdrawal of his patrol.’
James Stuart Thain was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 2 December 1914, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from August 1915. Awarded the Military Cross and Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1916) within six months of landing in France, he was advanced Captain, and ultimately was promoted Major.
