The Constitutional Club, always closely allied to the Conservative party, was founded in 1883, and until 1959 was based at 28 Northumberland avenue. Later it occupied rooms, firstly in the Junior Carlton Club and then the United Services Club, before acquiring premises of its own on the corner of St. James's street and Pall Mall. By the mid-1970s membership had dwindled to under 1,000 and it closed in 1979
